Today as I went into a shop I saw a real hobbit - that is to say, a person of the exact size as a hobbit; attractive and perfectly proportioned. And just for a moment I felt how very nice it would be if there were little people around, as well as big people - like living in Bree.

Last time through The Return of the King I wept because there wasn't a True High King to set things right.

@rb - It is hard to imagine what life would be like under a Good King; father to the nation. (Instead of a cabal of the demon-posessed). But it would always have been an exception, and many kings/ lineages were usurpers - as evidenced by their actions. For instance WIlliam the Conquerer had a reasonable 'claim' on the English throne, but his life an legacy was that of a usurper and an arbitrary tyrant; and his lineage was one of mostly bad kings squabbling over the spoils - for a long time.
