(Instead of a cabal of the demon-posessed). But it would always have been an exception, and many kings/ lineages were usurpers - as evidenced by their actions. For instance WIlliam the Conquerer had a reasonable 'claim' on the English throne, but his life an legacy was that of a usurper and an arbitrary tyrant; and his lineage was one of mostly bad kings squabbling over the spoils - for a long time.
