The Notion Club Papers (NCPs) is an unfinished (posthumous) novel by JRR Tolkien. The Notion Club was a fantasy version of The Inklings. Why did Tolkien hate allegory?

Because allegory takes 'real life' in this world and maps it onto a fantasy world - while Tolkien wanted to write a fantasy world that would map onto real life.
The Lord of the Rings is therefore an anti-allegory.
